How many pieces of luggage are allowed on southwest?

I'm looking to bring a bigger suitcase, and then my purse...does carry on luggage count towards the number of pieces of luggage allowed ?also what dimensions must the luggage be? would having your cellphone/ipod in your pocket count for carry on because if they don't then i'll bring 2 big bags and my cellphone and ipod with me.
